Bhairavkunda Trek is a famous trekking route lying in Northern-east of Kathmandu Valley near the Tibetian border. This trek can be categorized under holy trek because the prime site of this trek is Bhairavkunda Lake, which is a holy and pilgrimage site. This lake lies in an altitude of 4,250m. Hindu and Buddhist followers intend this site during an annual fare held on the day of full moon in the month of Bhadra. The name to this lake is given after Lord Bhairav; a destructive image of Lord Shiva.
Apart from being a holy one, this trekking route is also strenuous and exciting. Beside the holy site, this trek offers views of most incredible Himalaya Ranges. Mountain peaks that can be viewed during this trek are Dorje Lakpa [6,966m], Madiya [6,257m] and Phurbi Ghhyachu [6,637m]
The Bhairavkunda Trek starts from Jalbire 81km far away from the Kathmandu Valley on the north-eastern side. As we walk, our path goes through many remote villages where Newars, Rais, Gurungs and Sherpas are the major inhabitants of the total population. We ascend along the elevation thin takes us to the forest camp situated in an altitude of 3,150. We pass through thick forests covered by Rhododendron and oak. We get to encounter with animals like snow leopard, red panda, Himalaya black bear and so on. The chirping of birds adds a charm throughout our trek.
As we gradually elevate towards Pini, most of the trekkers who are first timers experience altitude sickness. Then we take an exhausting climb to an altitude of 4,250m and reach Bhairavkunda. In this site we can see a temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and where followers of Hindu and Buddhism worship.
