Upper Dolpo Trek

4 Nights 5 days in Kathmandu, 19 Nights 20 days Trekking, 4 Nights hotel in Kathmandu, Total 25 days trip wild and pristine landscape. Geographically, it is similar to Tibetan plateau and is generally dry, cold and sparsely


The trekking route passes through many gigantic mountain ranges such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Kanjirowa and others too. Also, you need to go through lower Dolpo in order to get to the upper regions. Trekkers who walk in this area are highly enthused by the remoteness, stunning mountain views and the innocent friendly local inhabitants. You can get into the local people here know about their culture and traditions.

The population in this area are only a few hundred and are among world’s highest dwellers. The villages in upper Dolpo are at an altitude of 4,300m. These villages are full of artistically designed natural beauties and humanly made cultural heritages. Almost all the population practise Buddhism here and later the tradition began to flow to Tibetan sectors too.

The books; Peter Matthiessen’s “Snow Leopard” and David Snellgrove’s “Himalayan Pilgrimage” have contributed to the beauties of the region and attract tourists to have a walk and enjoy the scenic views here. The Dolpo trek will also take you further to the mysterious land above.


Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu [1,300m/4,264ft]

Upon arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our representatives. After completion of official formalities, we pick our luggage and head towards a 4 star category hotel where you will be transferred to stay overnight.

Day 02: Full day Kathmandu sightseeing and trek preparations

You will be woken up with a morning call along with bed tea and breakfast. Today, we will enjoy sightseeing around Kathmandu the entire day including visits to some of the major places of the city such as Pashupatinath, Swayambhunath, Boudha and so on. These sites have been listed as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. We get back to our hotel in late evening and stay overnight

Day 03: Kathmandu – Nepalgunj

We leave the hotel and head towards the airport. Arriving an hour before the scheduled flight time, we complete some of the official formalities and take off for Nepalgunj. Hotel overnight

Day 04: Nepalgunj – Juphal – Dunai; 2 – 3 hours

We need to take another flight from the Nepalgunj airstrip to Juphal. This particular flight offers superb views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks to the north. Upon arrival in Juphal, we exit the airport and begin our trekking part to Dunai for today. Teahouse overnight

Day 05: Dunai – Ankhe; 5 – 6 hours

From Dunai, we divert our route from King Mahendra Statue, cross a suspension bridge and turn to west. The path begins to elevate with barren lands around. We arrive at Phokshundo River Valley and finally arrive at Ankhe. Stay overnight in Ankhe

Day 06: Ankhe – Sulighat; 5 – 6 hours

The path experiences altitude fluctuations time to time. We gain altitude and come across a ridge from where we can view beautiful geographical formations down below our toes. After a good day's of walk, we arrive in Sulighat where we stay overnight

Day 07: Sulighat – Phoksundo Lake; 4 – 5 hours

We go through the western side of the Phokshundo River and cross it over the western wooden bridge that takes us to Phokshundo Lake. As we cross the River and move away from it, we later can see the River very beautiful. Camp at the bank of Phokshundo Lake to stay overnight

Day 08: Acclimatization Day at Phokshundo Lake

We spend this valuable day with rest. Acclimatization is very important in certain intervals of days. This idea prevents us from getting victimized by Acute Altitude Sickness that can cause serious problems to our health.

Day 09: Phokshundo Lake - Phokshundo Khola; 4 – 5 hours

From Phokshundo Lake, our adventure continues make our destination to Phokshundo River for today. Camp overnight at the banks of Phokshundo River

Day 10: Phokshundo Khola – Phokshundo Bhanjhyang; 6 – 7 hours

Our first hour of walk, the path before us levels itself and passes through a glacier valley. We make a steep and long climb to Phokshundo Bhanjhyang through various land formations such as rocks and boulders, green meadows, river moraines and moderately pitched plains. We arrive at Phokshundo Bhanjhyang at the end of the day to stay overnight

Day 11: Phokshundo Bhanjhyang – Shey Gompa via Kang-La pass; 5 – 6 hours

We move away from Phokshundo Bhanjyang as we get closer to our destination. A come across a beautiful pass today named Kang La Pass. The top of this pass comprises of an amazing viewpoint that offers outstanding views of the surrounding atmosphere. After crossing the pass, we move towards Shey Gompa to set up our camp for overnight stay

Day 12: Exploration Day at Shey Gompa; The crystal monastery

We explore the hidden treasures of the site the entire day. It feels great to explore a new place and gain knowledge about it from history till date. Getting lost in the geographical formations around and watching some of the unique contributions of nature becomes the best part of the trip

Day 13: Shey Gompa - Namduna Gaon via Saldang La; 6 – 7 hours

Our walk begins with pleasant footsteps. The path descends gradually and becomes zig zag later on. Saldang La, which is an amazing pass that falls in our way comprises of a unique structure. After crossing this pass, we head towards Namduna Gaon for overnight stay

Day 14: Namduna Gaon – Saldang; 4 – 5 hours

After a couple of hours of walking, we can view Saldang village down below on a plateau high above the Nam Khongmala. This village is the largest one in the entire inner region of Dolpo. We start to descend down and make our way to the village where we spend our night

Day 15: Saldang – Yangze Gompa; 4 – 5 hours

The region after this point is the least touched one by any of the explorers. There are small settlements of Tiling and Luri Gaon. Then, we cross the Pangzang River. After some time of walking from this point, takes us to the unexplored region of Yangze. We stay overnight in our camp near Yangze Gompa

Day 16: Yangze Gompa – Sibu; 6 – 7 hours

There are two routes from Yangze to Sibu. We pass all the way through Nishal Gaon and Shimen Gaon. The path that leads to Saldang village is shorter and easier one. Preferring this route to the other one, we go through terraced fields, stupas, mani walls, chortens and a beautiful monastery. Stay overnight in Sibu

Day 17: Sibu – Jeng La Phedi; 5 – 6 hours

We follow the banks of Nam Khong Khola, and arrive at a spot where we finally part from the River after turning east. We then arrive at a junction of two small tributaries and head our way down to the bottom of the Jeng La where we spend our night

Day 18: Jeng La Phedi - Tokyu Gaon via Jeng La; 5 – 6 hours

We climb the Jeng La Phedi and reach to the top of the cliff. The top point offers superb views of the northern face of the Dhaulagiri massif. From here, we take a rough path to the Tarap Valley. At the end of the day, we arrive at a green and pleasant valley of Tokyu Gaon. Stay overnight in this village

Day 19: Tokyu Gaon – Dho Tarap; 4 – 5 hours

The land valley beyond the Tokyu village is plain and comprises of rich vegetation of green grasses. This site is completely different from any of the places of the inner regions of Dolpo. After a couple of hours, we arrive at Dho Tarap where we spend our night

Day 20: Acclimatization Day at Dho Tarap

We spend this valuable day with rest. Acclimatization is very important in certain intervals of days. This idea prevents us from getting victimized by Acute Altitude Sickness that can cause serious problems to our health.

Day 21: Dho Tarap – Tarap Khola [Kamakharka]; 6 -7 hours

This day brings us a long walk all the way from Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola. For this reason we have already had a complete rest the previous day in order to restore our energy and stamina. On then we go through various kind of land formations and even several species of domestic as well as wild lives

Day 22: Tarap Khola – Khani Gaon; 4 – 5 hours

With an early breakfast, we head down towards the gorge of the Tarap river. There exists a lot of camp sites all around the banks of the river. We can watch other explorers similar to us staying in camps that they had built the previous night. Walking along our planned route, we come to Khani Gaon; a beautiful village in Dolpo, where we camp overnight

Day 23: Khani Gaon – Tarakot; 4 – 5 hours

Today, our path takes us to vague village of Lalberi. Passing through lush forests of Rhododendron and oak, we continue our walk still following the banks of the river to down below. We get eager to reach Tarakot only because we have been exhausted by the entire day of walk. Stay overnight in Tarakot

Day 24: Tarakot – Dunai; 5 – 6 hours

We leave Tarakot and walk along the banks of Bheri River towards the gorge with rich forests of oak and rhododendron beside. After about 6 hours of trekking, we arrive at Dunai and stay overnight

Day 25: Dunai – Jhuphal; 2 – 3 hours

We are close to the end of our Upper Dolpo Trek now. We still do not leave the path followed by the Bheri River. We make a short trek this day and arrive in Jhuphal after a few hours of trekking. Stay overnight in Jhuphal

Day 26: Jhuphal – Nepalgunj – Kathmandu

With an early wake up call, we have a healthy breakfast and leave for the Jhuphal airstrip. We take off from Jhuphal to land in Nepalgunj. From this airstrip, we again take another flight to Kathmandu. Hotel overnight

Day 27: Free day in Kathmandu

You will be offered with a leisure day in the Kathmandu city this day. You can either go for a short sightseeing tour around the city or even do shopping as per your interest. We get back to our hotel in the late evening and enjoy a cultural show along with a farewell dinner in our hotel.

Day 27: Final Departure

With unforgettable memories taken, we declare an end to our beautiful holiday in Nepal. Our representatives will escort you to the airport before 3 hours of scheduled flight time.
